Study 2
Vocabulary memorization is crucial for language proficiency performance. There are different strategies to remember vocabulary. The two most popular ways of learning vocabulary are with flashcards and by reading and writing. This study is to investigate the differences of the two vocabulary learning strategies on students’ vocabulary retention. Two groups of EFL undergraduate students from the same program are invited to take part in the study. First, they are given a vocabulary pre-test. Second, students in the first group learn the vocabularies from the textbook with flashcards, and students in the second group learn the same vocabularies by reading and writing. After 15 weeks, students from two groups take the vocabulary post-test. The pre-test and the post-test are the same. The result shows that students in the first group have a higher score than those in the second group although they have similar scores in the pre-test. The study concludes that the flashcard strategy is better for vocabulary retention than the reading and writing strategy.
